Lois Arlene Varley (née Peterson), 97, of Franksville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 26, 2026.

Born on December 19, 1928, in Racine, Lois was the beloved daughter of the late Harry and Inga (née Petersen) Peterson. She grew up with a love for family, animals, and the simple joys of life—values she carried with her throughout her 97 years.

On August 29, 1953, Lois was united in marriage to James Varley in Racine. Their love story began in a most fitting way—at a dog show, where Lois proudly showed her schnauzers and James presented his German shepherd. That chance meeting blossomed into a devoted marriage filled with laughter, partnership, and deep affection. They shared many wonderful years together until James’ passing on July 5, 2009.

Lois cherished the farm life, especially caring for her horses, and found happiness in the quiet beauty of the countryside. She was known for her ever-present smile, her kind and gentle spirit, and her unwavering ability to see the bright side of any situation. Above all, Lois loved her family. Time spent with her husband, children, and grandchildren brought her great joy. She also had a fondness for a good cup of coffee and chocolate.

Lois will be deeply missed by her daughters, Karen (Patrick) Wirtz and Jackie (Dennis) Breeden; her daughter at heart, Linda (Thomas) Wirtz; her eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild on the way; along with many other cherished family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James; her daughter Kay Weber; her son Duane Varley and infant son, James Varley III; her brother, Gilbert Peterson; sisters, Marlyn Schultz and Mariel Peterson; and her grandchild, Elijah Brown.

Visitation will be held at Wilson Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2026, with a service to follow.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Heartland Hospice and Kenosha Senior Living for their compassionate care and support.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations be made to the Racine Humane Society at 8900 16th St, Mount Pleasant, WI 53177 or a tree to be planted in Lois’ memory.

Lois’ warmth, optimism, and loving heart will remain in the memories of all who were blessed to know her.
