Lyle James Bertrand, born on July 25, 1935, in New Franken, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2026, at the Veteran's hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota, shortly after celebrating his 91st birthday. He lived a life characterized by devotion—to his family, his faith, and the pursuits that brought him joy and fulfillment.

Lyle is survived by a loving extended family who cherished his presence and guidance. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 37 years, Brenda Bertrand, with whom he shared many adventures, especially their fondness for cruising and visiting friends around the country. His daughter Carie Curtis, step-daughter Devina Gundberg, and step-son Julius Allgier each carry forward his enduring legacy of kindness and zest for life. Lyle was a proud grandfather to Cassandra Curtis, Connor Gundberg, Lillian Gundberg, Alistar Gundberg, Harry Gundberg, Sophia Allgier, Wyatt Bintliff, and Kierstin Bintliff. All remember him for his sense of humor, and ability to make them laugh.

Those who preceded him in death include his father Russell Bertrand, his mother Eunice Bertrand, his brother Kenneth Bertrand, and ex-wife Geraldine Krestensen.

Lyle’s remarkable career began with service to his country. He served just over four years in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged, a source of great pride throughout his life. After his military service, Lyle devoted 35 years to the Federal Aviation Administration, retiring after a long and distinguished career that took him across the United States.

Known for his adventurous spirit, Lyle never missed an opportunity to embrace the outdoors. A Master Scuba Diver, he traveled the world on diving trips, always seeking out new places to explore beneath the water’s surface. He relished fishing, canoeing, and white water rafting, he had a lifelong love of water and nature. Even as years passed, Lyle continued to enjoy swimming as long as he was able, and he often spoke of his fondest memories camping all over the country, frequently from the comfort of his trusty Econoline van while on assignment with the FAA.

Beyond his love for adventure, Lyle made time for simple joys. He played the accordion and delighted in polka dancing, often sharing his musical talents and infectious love of polka music with those around him. Family and friends looked forward to his signature sourdough pancakes and Wisconsin wieners, tributes to his Midwestern roots. His sense of fun was matched by a kind heart and easy-going nature, and he saw the best in every situation, leaving an uplifting mark on all who knew him.

Lyle’s commitment to community was evident through his volunteer work at the YMCA and his enduring friendships, which he nurtured across decades and distances. He was a proud and devout Catholic, remaining a long-time parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Hill City, South Dakota, and attending Mass faithfully up until his passing.

A Vigil Service will be held on August 9, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, with visitation beginning at 5:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 a.m. on August 10, 2026, at the same church. Following the Mass, Lyle will be laid to rest at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota, on August 10, 2026, at 1:30 p.m.

Lyle James Bertrand will be remembered for his gentle spirit, love of family, voracious appetite for adventure, and unwavering faith. His legacy lives on in the cherished memories of all whose lives he touched, a testament to a life exceptionally well lived.
