Andreas (Andy) Kaiafas, a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend passed away in his home on August 13, 2026 at the age of 89.

Andreas was born in the small village of Mia Milia, Cyprus on February 17, 1937 to Costas and Maria Kaiafas. He was the second of eight children; they grew up poor but proud. He came to the United States in 1959 and worked his way through school and earned a Bachelor’s of Science from Fairleigh Dickenson University, then a Masters in Science. He married his beloved wife Maria (Tsiarris) in Cyprus in 1969. They lived briefly in the United States until 1972, then returned to Cyprus where he worked for the government of Cyprus in the Treasury Department. In 1974, the Turkish invasion of Cyprus occurred and Andreas, Maria, and their three children became refugees from the war. They fled Cyprus, driving 2,000 miles through Europe, from Greece to England, with eight people in one car. He eventually brought his family to the United States and made a wonderful life for them. In 1977 he, along with his brothers, Nick and Tony, and their Uncle Andy saw an opportunity to reach for the American dream and they purchased the Ocean Queen Diner in Brick, NJ. A few years later they purchased the Ocean Bay Diner in Point Pleasant, NJ. Over the thirty years that he owned these establishments just about everyone in town got to know him.

Andreas was tall and cut an imposing figure, but he was a gentle giant to those who knew him. He was generous and soft spoken. He helped many of his nieces and nephews, supporting them by letting them stay in his home while they worked and went to university. Andreas had a strong relationship with the community including the police officers in town. He worked hard, and after he retired, he enjoyed traveling back to Cyprus to see family. He was very active with his church, St Barbara Greek Orthodox Church of Toms River, where he served on the parish council and cooked food for the Greek festivals. He was a member of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) as well as a long-standing member of Pan Gregorian Enterprises. He had a full life.

Andreas is survived by his wife, Maria Kaiafas; his son, Dr. Costas Kaiafas and his wife Dr. Cindy Rossi; his daughter Anna Casey and her husband Michael Casey Esq; his daughter-in-law Wendy Hummel and her husband Matt Hummel; his brothers Stelios and Sotiris and his sisters Demetra and Lenia. He has eight grandchildren: Andreas, Andrew, Christina, Christos, Nicole, Carli, Mariana, and Maggie. He has numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins both here and in Cyprus. He is predeceased by his beloved son Christos, and his brothers Tony, Solis, and Nicos.

Viewing will be at Silverton Memorial Funeral Home on Church Rd. in Toms River, NJ on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 from 4pm-8pm.

There will be a viewing at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church on Church Rd. in Toms River on Wednesday, August 19, 2026 from 9am with funeral services directly following at 10am.

In lieu of flowers please send donations to St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church at 2200 Church Rd., Toms River, NJ 08753.
