Legacy Obituary changed from to Dene Swenney Murphey July 6, 1946 - August 22, 2026 Dene Swenney Murphey, entered into her eternal rest on Saturday, August 22, 2026. She was born July 6, 1946 in Joplin, Missouri to Frances and Howard Swenney. Dene graduated from Lamar Consolidated high school in Rosenberg (she was in the band and pep squad), and then went to Massey Business College in Houston, graduating with a secretarial degree. She graduated from A&M Kingsville in 2001 with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Accounting. Dene married Ronnie Murphey on February 26, 1966. She lived most of her life in South Texas, as a wonderful wife, mom, Girl Scout leader, OGHS Band mom, Orange Grove FFA supporter, small business owner, sewing hobbyist and a volunteer for several organizations. She served for 14 years in the Alice Ambassadors, the membership outreach and support volunteers of the Alice Chamber of Commerce. Dene served many leadership roles while a member of the Alice Ambassadors including Secretary, Treasurer and also as President from 2006-2008. Dene relocated to the Bryan/College Station area in 2018 and continued her volunteer activities at the George W. Bush Presidential LIbrary. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Bryan Swenney, her nephew Al Morone Jr, and her loving husband Ronnie. Dene is survived by: her two daughters, Kathryn (Mark) Hitt of College Station and Jennifer (Dwayne) Sleight of Austin; one son, Kevin (Elizabeth) Murphey of Odem; one sister, Karen (Rocky) Linn of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren, Jaycee (Sho) Arai of College Station, Jonathan Hitt and Rachel Hitt of College Station. One great granddaughter, Shion Arai of College Station and her bonus daughter Rose (Steve) Jones of Carson City, NV and a bonus grandson Clayton Jones as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to thank: 1. Acara Hospice for their love, compassion, and support. They are all angels. 2. Alyssa Hunt with All Heart Senior Care & Placement for her expertise with finding the best care & her care for the family 3. Our House — Senior Living and Homecare for their impeccable care for mom and their support for the family in mom’s final days Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 2nd from 5-7 pm at Holmgreen Mortuary in Alice, Texas, 2061 E. Main St. Funeral Service will be held September 2nd from 7-8 pm at Holmgreen Mortuary Chapel in Alice, Texas, 2061 E.
