Darlene Dinwiddie, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2026, following a strong and courageous fight. She was born in Bolivar, Missouri, on January 22, 1945, possibly on her family’s farm. She married Charles Dinwiddie Sr., and together they built a life and family that would become the center of so much of her world.
Darlene lived a life built around caring for people. She spent many years in childcare, a profession that seemed almost perfectly made for her. Nurturing came naturally to Darlene. She loved children deeply and had a gift for making them feel safe, loved, and cared for. Over the years, she helped raise not only members of her own family, but countless children in her community who were fortunate enough to know her.
But childcare was only one chapter of a life filled with many talents and adventures. Darlene at one time owned a restaurant, and she was a professional cake maker whose creations became part of some of life’s most important celebrations. She was a gifted seamstress and baker. From newborn quilts to wedding cakes and first birthday cakes, Darlene had a way of putting her hands and her heart into the moments that mattered most.
To her family, Darlene was the truest example of what it meant to be a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and so much more. She was the beloved mother of Charley Dinwiddie and wife Shoni, Laura Rash and husband Tim, and John Dinwiddie…her baby boy, as the family often joked with her. She poured herself into her family, working tirelessly to make sure they always knew they were loved.
She had a quiet strength that didn’t need to announce itself. She simply kept going, kept loving, and kept taking care of everyone around her.
Her home was warm and welcoming, and Darlene truly didn’t know a stranger. There was always room at her table, another dinner to host, a party to help plan, a child to love, or someone who needed something she could make with her own hands. She found joy in creating a home where people felt welcome and in giving her family the kind of memories that last long after the meal was over.
Darlene loved the Lord in her own quiet and genuine way. She carried that faith with her, and she had a deep peace about heaven and the beauty she believed waited for her there. It was important to Darlene that she have a traditional funeral, a final gathering that reflected the faith and traditions that quietly meant so much to her.
She was a lover of flowers and gardening, and she found beauty in the simple things. She loved the color purple, Elvis, Native American history, and learning about her family history. She was deeply sentimental and treasured family keepsakes, stories, and anything that connected her to the people and places she loved. She still spoke often of her parents and her childhood, carrying those memories with her throughout her life.
Perhaps the greatest measure of Darlene’s life is not found in the jobs she held or the things she made, but in the people who carry a piece of her with them. She left behind quilts that will be wrapped around babies, cakes that will live in photographs, recipes that will be made again, stories that will be told, flowers that will be planted, and most importantly, people who know how to love because she taught them how.
If you have the time next spring, quietly plant a pot of flowers and think of Darlene. She would love that.
Darlene’s life was full of love, hard work, creativity, family, and quiet faith. She spent her life making sure the people around her felt cared for. And now, after everything she carried for so many years, she can finally rest.
She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
Darlene’s family would like to take the time to give a very special thank you to her dear friend DJ Muir, who spent many nights by Darlene’s side, helping care for her and making it possible for her to remain comfortable in her own home, surrounded by the people and things she loved.
The family is also deeply grateful to everyone who helped make Darlene’s final days peaceful, meaningful, and special. Your kindness, time, love, and compassion will never be forgotten.
