Barbara Jeanne Ramsey, 78, passed away on September 30, 2026, in Rawlins, Wyoming.

Barbara was born January 10, 1948, in Lawrence, Kansas, to Leon Minger Ramsey Jr. and Marjorie Helen Easter Ramsey. She grew up in Garden City, Kansas, alongside her three sisters and graduated from Garden City High School in 1966. She went on to attend the University of Wyoming, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and becoming a member of Chi Omega Sorority. Wyoming became her home, and for 54 years, Barbara built a life in Rawlins defined by teaching, music, friendship, faith, and service to others.

Barbara devoted her career to education, teaching for Carbon County School District #1 until her retirement in 2018. Over the course of her 45-plus-year career, she taught elementary music, first grade, and a range of other subjects. Her commitment to education extended beyond the classroom. As a member of the Wyoming Education Association, Barbara served in leadership roles at both the local and state levels. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women and Delta Kappa Gamma. Beyond her professional dedication, she took a genuine interest in the children she taught and continued to follow the lives of many former students long after they had left her classroom. The relationships she formed were lasting ones, a reflection of the care and attention she gave to others throughout her life.

Music remained an important part of Barbara’s life beyond the classroom. She sang, taught piano lessons, and for many years shared her talents as an organist at the United Methodist Church as well Rawlins Cooperative Parish. Her faith was expressed as much through service as through worship. She participated in the church’s community outreach, volunteered wherever she was needed, and readily took on leadership roles and responsibilities.

Barbara was equally engaged in the broader life of her community as well. She was active in P.E.O. Chapter AF, the Red Hat Society, a movie club, and a book club, and she cultivated a wide and enduring circle of friends. She loved reading, movies, traveling, knitting, and crochet, making prayer shawls and baby blankets for those in need. In retirement, Barbara was rarely without plans, often meeting friends for coffee and enjoying the friendships she had built over many years. Her days were full, not simply with activities, but with people.

To her family and friends, Barbara was loving, caring, and generous. She was a beloved sister and aunt, a loyal friend, and someone who made a practice of staying connected. Across a lifetime in Rawlins, she gave those same qualities to her students, her church, her friends, and her community.

Barbara is survived by her three sisters, Dr. Gwen Arnett and her husband, Dr. Ken Arnett, of Mission Hills, Kansas; Juli Burnett and her husband, Dr. John A. Burnett, of Lawrence, Kansas; and Sheryll Clarke and her husband, Dan Clarke, of Hutchinson, Kansas; and her nieces, Erin Burnett of Los Angeles and Lyndy Burnett of New York City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon Minger Ramsey Jr. and Marjorie Helen Easter Ramsey.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Rawlins Cooperative Parish in support of the Brilliant Beginnings Pre-School.
