Michael R. Detelj, 37, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family at Yale New Haven Hospital on October 16, 2026.

How do you find words big enough to describe someone who meant so much to so many? The truth is you can't. Michael R. Detelj was a son, a brother, but most of all he was a friend. Michael didn't just have an extraordinary number of friends; he had an extraordinary capacity for friendship. There is a difference between knowing hundreds of people and making hundreds of people feel genuinely known, valued, and loved.

To know Michael was to understand that a life isn't measured simply by the years we are given, but by the connections we make, the love we share, and the pieces of ourselves we leave behind in others. If there was one thing Michael understood better than most, it was the extraordinary beauty of human connection. His friendships stretched across decades, continents, and every chapter of his life. From childhood friends who had known him for as long as they could remember, to people he met in the most unexpected places and circumstances. Michael built genuine, meaningful relationships that transcended time and distance.

Michael was an artist in every sense of the word. He experienced the world with a depth of emotion that he never felt the need to hide. Instead, he embraced it. Through painting, writing, music, and film, he found countless ways to give his feelings a voice. His creativity was an extension of who he was: expressive, thoughtful, deeply human, and unafraid to be vulnerable.

Where others might have struggled to put their emotions into words, Michael turned his into something tangible. Something that could be seen, heard, felt, and shared. His art was not simply about creating something beautiful. It was another way of connecting, another way of saying, this is what it feels like to be human.

Michael's legacy is kept alive by his mother, Lori Grechika, his sister, Dakota Del Angel, his stepfather Daniel DuBois, his dog "Balto," and countless other friends and family members that love him dearly. Although his time on earth was far too short, the love, memories and art he shared will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

Family and friends may attend visitation on Sunday, October 25, 2026, from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad Street, in Plainville. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment at St. Thomas Cemetery in Southington is scheduled for 11:00 AM on Monday, October 26, 2026. Those who wish to attend should meet directly at the cemetery. To leave a message of remembrance, or for directions, please visit www.baileycares.com.
